Wednesday 14 October 2015 saw the Safe Haven Crisis Café in Aldershot win the ‘Improving Care for people experiencing Mental Health Crisis’ at the Positive Practice in Mental Health 2015 Awards held in Newcastle, hosted by Northumberland Tyne & Wear Foundation NHS Trust. It was a fantastic accolade for the success and support of a service available to people during evenings and weekend – a safe and welcoming place and access to mental health support when it’s needed. People who use the service are welcome to walk in and speak to mental health professionals and have a choice to speak with peers or volunteers.
The café has contributed to a reduction in the numbers of people presenting to A&E and being admitted to mental health hospitals. Other cafes are being planned for Surrey, with one in Camberley due to open this winter.
The project also was Highly Commended for its Working in Partnership aspect – the Safe Haven is funded by NHS North East Hampshire and Farnham CCG, delivered and developed jointly by Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Trust, mcch and Catalyst.
