What is Counselling Service?

The Women’s Support Centre Counselling Service is staffed by both fully qualified counsellors and those on placement. All counsellors hold a Certificate to Practice and operate within the ethical guidelines of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

What is Counselling?

Counselling is a professional service that provides support to individuals facing emotional, psychological, or personal challenges. It offers a safe, confidential space for women to explore their feelings, thoughts, and behaviours with a counsellor and helps individuals gain insight, develop coping strategies, and work toward making positive changes in their lives.

It is important to note that counselling is not advice, advocacy, or practical support.

Who Can Benefit from the WSC Counselling Service?

Our counselling service is available to all women in Surrey, including those who are victims of domestic abuse, affected by the criminal justice system, or at risk of offending. We offer up to 26 weeks of free, individual, and confidential counselling.

How Can I Access Counselling?

To access the counselling service, please click here to make a self / professional referral for support. New referrals are discussed weekly, and we aim to be in touch within two working days of this discussion to invite you to an initial assessment session with our Co-ordinator to determine whether the counselling service is right for you.

What Happens During a Counselling Assessment?

In the assessment session, you will engage in an initial conversation with the Counselling Co-ordinator. This session is designed to evaluate your needs and readiness for counselling. The Co-ordinator will explain the assessment process and ensure you feel comfortable and informed. You will have the opportunity to share your challenges and how they affect your daily life, discuss your feelings, thoughts, and any specific issues. The co-ordinator will also assess your readiness for counselling, including your availability, goals, expectations, and any concerns you might have. If it is felt appropriate, you will be put on the counselling waiting list.

Confidentiality in Counselling

Confidentiality is a cornerstone of our Counselling Service. We will not share any information about your contact with the Women’s Support Centre counselling sessions without your permission. However, there are specific circumstances in which we may need to break confidentiality, such as if we believe you intend to cause serious harm to yourself or others, or if child abuse is disclosed. Additionally, legal obligations may require us to disclose certain information. Our Confidentiality Policy will be thoroughly explained to you during the assessment session.
