Tough Mudder challenge after childhood stroke

Almost 20 years after his London Marathon achievement, Neil from Surrey took part in the Tough Mudder obstacle endurance event in May 2022.

For most people, this may seem a reasonable achievement but for Neil this is pretty incredible. At the age of just six, he was struck down by a stroke that threatened to leave him partially paralysed and disabled for life. Neil had to learn to walk and talk again and with hard work and dedication, at the age of 24 he completed the London Marathon – a fantastic achievement.

The Tough Mudder event bought a new challenge for Neil. Famously known for its gruelling obstacles, the need for good body strength was a must.

Inspiring others
From a young age, Neil has had to build resilience and work hard to maintain his physical and mental wellbeing. He still has weakness on the right side of his body but over the last six months, he enlisted the help of a personal trainer, David Swinbank of 1st place fitness who helped strengthen his body. This was a real benefit when training for the Tough Mudder event.

Neil knows how it feels to live with a disability and has dedicated most of his career to helping and inspiring others. On the day of the event, he did extremely well and completed the 15k and 30 obstacles in just over 3 hours.

Catalyst are extremely proud of Neil and very grateful for all the hard work and commitment over the last few months. Neil raised an incredible £440 for Catalyst and the money raised will go towards making a difference to people’s lives across Surrey.
